FATHER KNOWS BEST

"How many ladies can say "'My Daddy picked my hairstylist ?"  Not to many I'm sure, because the average Dad knows nothing about hair, nor do they have the tenacity to pick the right one for you.  Well, not in this case.  Not only  was I chosen for her, but little did she know, his wife (her mom) as well!

One afternoon in the spring of 2013, I get a call from comedian and actor  Synbad  of the hit series Different World and a pleathora of Movie credits  including House Guest which is one of my all time favorites.   Id previously met Synbad on a job with Black AIDS.org doing a PSA for HIV and aids awareness not to mention, that he and I both are from small towns in Western Michigan.  Synbad explained that his daughter wasn't having much luck with finding the right hairdresser for she and her mom.  He also mentioned that neither of them were happy with the condition of their hair, so he decided to take the matters into his own hands.

synbad actually made the appointmennt himself, prepaid and if I'm not mistaken, showed up to make sure she had arrived safely,  comfortable and satisfied.

When Paige arrived that afternoon, she was over it. She had been trying to find a hair person for a while, " no such luck"  her hair was in bad condition and she was convinced that her hair would not grow anymore... She tried hair extensions, braids and she even cut it short with an attempt to start over and still no progress.  On that particular day she had exhausted the possibilities and had just given up on the idea of having long hair again.  At that point her hair was chin length with a few longer pieces that were remnant of what used to be before it broke off.  Her hair was so thick, that she used relaxers for managibility and control, but apparently they were to strong because her hair was very dry and Brittle.

Then I hear the words "do what you want to do" Now if you know like I do, that's not what you want to say to most hair dressers, especially If it's your first time. Fortunately for Paige, she was in good hands and after Listening to her pains, I decide to do what I thought she needed based on her goals, as opposed to taking advantage of this opportunity to unleash this creative evolution I had brewing inside me.

For the first few visits I thought it was important to get Paige's hair back in balance .  The first thing I did was cut her hair into a cheek length bob which would give us an opportunity to get rid of a lot of the bad ends and cut out some of the old relaxer, because she also expressed an interest in growing her hair out into a naturally curly Afro style. Next I suggested doing keritan treatments to make her hair stronger, seal the cuticle , prevent split ends and to keep her hair from breaking during her transition from relaxers. I also offered celophanes for a pop of color and extra protein for this hair grow journey with Paigee. She was "all in and ready to give Darico Magic the old college try.

For the next year Paige and I kept a consistent routine of regular "TNT". Treatments n Trims, and to get ahead of the game, I suggested a protective style to help us along the way, so I offered extensions of which we did for the next 3years until Paige's hair finally grew out long thick and healthy.

Fortunately Paige took pictures of the progress so I have an opportunity to share.

Paige is now rocking her own curly fro with fabulous color and guess what??  It never stopped growing.

Paige and I have not only remained tight, but my relationship with the entire family is so strong that I feel like they are an extension of my very own. Together I have seen her through varies photoshoots,  performances  and etc...  I even had the privilege of doing hair for her cousin and brothers entire weddings.

Paige is an amazing person and I am honored to have her in my life .

I really do feel this way and always have. I remember being a little boy around 7 or 8 years old.  I was fascinated with my aunt Felicia's dolls. She and I would comb and style hair all day long. Every once and a while she would let me take them home until my return.  It burned my dad up to see his son playing with dolls.  It was my mother who recognized the talent in me and bought me my own.  It changed my life.   I developed my skills on those Dolls and eventually moved on to various family members, friends and coworkers. Consequently I enrolled in   The Academy Of Scientific Hair Design in New Orleans LA while working on a bachelor's degree at HBCUs Dillard University.  After leaving New Orleans I still didn't feel as though I had enough educationbehind me to give the confidence I needed to succeed, so I enrolled in National Academy of Beauty Arts and studied under the Scientific Educational System for Redken.. My goal is to be an arsenal of knowledge and skills so that i'm able to accomplish all there is within my craft.  To achieve my goals, I stay educated, active and involved. DaRico Jackson
